How much time does my dog sleep for?
The average adult dog can sleep for between 10-12 hours a day, and a puppy can need almost 20 hours! No wonder then that choosing the right bed is such an important task for any dog owner. With such a wide range of different dog beds available there can be almost too many points to consider when you are looking for that perfect dog bed. At Chestnut Mill we want to reduce the stress of picking that ideal dog bed by helping you at least choose the right size for your dog. We have put together a list of popular dog breeds and the bed size that we would suggest. This can be found below, however remember dogs do vary in size within a breed and it is always best to measure you dog using our measuring guide and match this to the appropriate sized bed.
How to measure my Dog or Cat for their bed?
As a general rule the bed should be large enough for your dog or cat to lie comfortably in all natural positions. Some dogs prefer to sleep curled up but this does not mean that a bed is big enough just because they can curl up. Can they also lie stretched out too?
To measure your dog or cat, have them in a standing position and using a tape measure, measure from the tip of their nose to the base of their tail. Then add 4-6” (10cm - 15cm) for cats and small dogs, or 8-12” (20cm - 30cm) for medium to large dogs. This should then be the size of the bed you are looking for.
Dog Bed / Dog Breed - Typical Bed Sizes
Please note the name of the bed size may vary from brand to brand, so concentrate on the actual measurement and ideally measure your dog first!
