Checking stored bird food in a dry shed before winter

Bird Food Storage: Check the Bag, Bin and Scoop Before Winter

A bag of bird food is only useful if its contents remain suitable to feed. Before buying for winter, look at the food already in your shed or garage. A quick check of the bag, storage place and scoop can reveal problems that are easy to miss when you refill a feeder in a hurry.

October is preparation time. Under the RSPB’s current seasonal guidance, seed and peanut feeding resumes from November; check the linked advice before changing what you offer. Buying a bag now does not mean it needs to go straight into a feeder.

Identify every opened bag

Keep the product label, best-before date and batch details with the food. If you move a bag into a storage container, retain the original packaging where practical. Mark when it was opened so that an old half-bag does not quietly become a permanent fixture behind the new delivery.

Put different foods in clearly separate containers. A scoop used for peanuts should not be left in another animal’s feed, and a plain tub without a label is a poor place to keep several similar-looking products. Make the arrangement understandable to everyone who helps.

Check the storage conditions

Choose a dry, clean place protected from rodents and other animals. Inspect underneath the bag and around the container for leaks, condensation, damaged packaging and spilled material. A tightly closed lid cannot repair food that was damp before it went into storage.

Raise the store off a damp floor and leave enough access to inspect it. Avoid squeezing food behind garden chemicals or household cleaners. Clean and dry an empty bin before a new bag goes in; do not pour fresh food over unidentified remnants.

Use a smaller, fresher working supply

Garden Wildlife Health recommends buying amounts that will be used reasonably soon and within the stated date. Estimate your normal winter use before choosing a pack. A larger bag is not good value if much of it deteriorates while waiting.

Our wild bird seed mixes offer different pack options for winter use. Check the current ingredients, pack size and storage instructions. Keep the daily working portion modest rather than leaving the main bag open beside the garden door.

Give the scoop its own routine

Use a clean, dry scoop reserved for bird food. Store it where it will stay dry, and avoid dipping a scoop from a wet feeder back into the bag. Lay out a separate place for dirty feeding equipment so it cannot contaminate the store.

Do not feed material that smells musty, looks mouldy, has become wet or has unexplained contamination. Dispose of suspect food securely where wildlife cannot eat it. Finish the check with three clear actions: what to use first, what to discard and what quantity you actually need to buy.
