The Farming Year - March

The Farming Year - March

March, especially for livestock farmers really gets busy.  Its not just the cows now after they started calving at the end of February.  The beginning of MArch is the start of the lambing season.  This can be very time intensive as the ewes and lambs can need 24 hour monitoring and care.  Sleepless nights are part of the course and more than one can be expected until all lamb and calves have been born.

For lambing, the ewes get sorted into groups, this is based around the number of lambs that they are carrying.  Vaccinations will have been done prior to the start of the lambing season and feet are trimmed to protect against foot rot.

As with previous months.  Other jobs include the spreading of slurry and fertiliser.  For those growing sugar beet, now is the time to get drilling or sowing.

Potato fields will see liquid fertiliser and other crop spraying will take place.
